This proves she's not a fan. The review is fair, nothing ecstatic but....

playing a set that omits most of the big hits. It didn't matter

...not so sure about that....

I read this earlier and pretty much straight away spotted those things! The set was jam packed with their big hits, what else would she call 60% of the setlist?

Also, the comment about the crowds age seemed a bit odd, I was surrounded by plenty of people a bit older than me, I'm 30, these people would have excellent memories of Violator & SOFAD and a good few seemed plenty old enough to have been fans for longer than that.

I don't mind whether they like the show or not, but it does annoy me that they say things that are so blatently rubbish! No wonder I never believe a review, far better to go and see for yourself.
The English press never send a 'friendly' reviewer to a Depeche gig; it is a kind of sport - having a pop at a band that have been so successful and yet never sold out artistically. The best you can expect is a grudging comment about the innovations in electronic music that DM heralded, or that they have loyal fans (real fans, I mean, not those strangeloves in the documentary mentioned in other threads!)

The fact that DM have consistently built on their fanbase with each new album is one of the very many things that make them so special. I'm 41 and saw DM live for the first time in '83 and now my 12 year old son has some DM on his MP3 playlists and I look forward to taking him to see DM soon. I had tickets for the cancelled O2 gig back in May and will be seeing them there in February 2010.

I'm sure the band are used to the lukewarm reception they get from the press. I am also sure that they realise the great affection and, dare I say it, devotion that they engender in their fans. Someone said that today's newspaper is tomorrow's fish and chip wrapper, so let Ms Sullivan have her opinion and we can get on with enjoying our music

Peace and Love for the Season x

Totally disagree. There have been a few favourable reviews posted of the Birmingham and London gigs.

My general feeling is that DM have turned things around & now have a glowing respect from near all the UK press.

Thankfully, gone are the days of the mid/late 80's when all they commented on was Martin's dress sense.

...And thankfully gone are the days of the early/mid 90s when all they commented was how many times did Dave actually die

Glad to see the UK press gives them a bit more respect nowdays!

To be fair, Dave did use the press in 1997 - 2001 for his own sort of counselling sessions. Nothing wrong with that and if its given to you on a plate, you can't blame the press.

But indeed, it got a bit boring.

Totaly agree with super-saint though.

True.
He did say recently that he maybe talked too much...

Oh, bless him!

These kind of small errors are irritating, like one of the U.S reviews calling Fly on the Windscreen "Fly on the Window" or another one claiming that the whole arena waved their arms in an impressing salute to POLICY OF TRUTH! While it may be seen as a marginal error, it make you think of all the other live-reviews you read and how "true" they are to details.

Quite irritating indeed
But for me, it just showes it's not even worth reading it nor paying any attention to it...
