Quick Tips: (Updated March 21st, 2014)

Due to a shockingly high number of fake spam accounts flooding the new registrations, we have temporarily closed new registrations to the forum. We are working on a solution to block the spammers without having to block genuine registration requests.

PLEASE READ the "Quick Tips" thread on this forum before contacting the moderators or admin about any issues you might be having. You will find the Quick Tips answer a lot of questions (logging in, editing posts, et cetera). The web staff appreciate those who read before posting and emailing. Thank you!

Default Search Feature 101 or: Want your thread to be replied and FOUND?

There's been a lot of thread killing recently. This is tiring for both members and mods. I usually provide a link to the existing threads on the same topic, when I close them, but I don't always have the time to do it, and when I don't, I get nothing but nice PMs about it.

When members register they are supposed to read, understand and follow the rules of the board. This includes doing a search before creating a new thread.

Now, it's not always easy to find a thread, I know. That's why I am asking you to think about your thread titles, that will allow everyone to find them, reply to them, or find them in the future.

For example:
"Do you think....?"
"Can you give me your opinion...?"
"I found this today..."
"A petition"
"This is awesome!!"
"Can you help me?"
are BAD titles. Try being more specific:
"Martin singing Sister of Night"
"Peace live version"
"New interview on Rolling Stone magazine"
"Help me with the message board people!"
"Petition for Ghost to be released as single"
Note, the use of nouns, titles and/or names increases the chances for your thread to be found.

Try using the search feature on the top of every forum page. It's easy:

1. Select Advanced search options.

2. Enter your key word (more than 3 characters) and select Search Titles Only. Choose your key word wisely, use a noun, a name, a title.

That's it. If you remember the exact phrase or words, then you'll do fine with the "Search Entire Posts" option.

It's ok if you want to be a thread starter, but do a search first. There are so many threads that chances are, the topic you want to talk about has already been covered. Thanks.

I have a bit more about the fine art of searching: Search this thread

Now that threads can get very long, there's a feature which allows you to search within that specific thread.

Look at the top of the thread, just below the page numbering.

There's an advanced section in this feature.

Give it a try.

Suggestion: When doing a search try several terms that could be related. For example 101 can't be used as a term because is too short, but you could use Pasadena, Rose Bowl, june 1988, etc.

Think about related words if your first try was not that fruitful.

hey, Pelicanito.
I also found "sticky" very useful ;-)
And thank you for all the clean up mods do.
Connecting similar threads helps traceability and avoid duplicates. The problem of having a main thread of, for example, "post your doubt here" is what you've referred... thread can go gigantic!
