I agree with Danka. Dave is a fantastic song writter. I am hoping he does another solo album very soon!

SOTU is a brilliant album but personally, Ultra is my favourite. I think the lyrics are raw emotion and extremely personal as are Gahans vocals. I think Gore and Gahan really melded on this one. But it's also the history behind the album that makes it more.......

Barrel of a gun is classic, epic DM as itīs best.
This is a load of bullshit, Dave Gahan is a great song writter. I love his songwritting. You are so narrow minded, and not giving Dave a chance to really shine. And the songs that he wrote for Sounds Of The Universe are brilliant. Sorry you don't have your facts straight.

Love ULTRA! ULTRA is more rock-ier IMO...SOTU is in my bottom 3 list...Like most of the songs but it doesn't compare w/ULTRA

IMO Ultra is a great album (my first dm album), but Exciter is also a favorite of mine. Playing The Angel beats both, and SOTU is on par with PTA if not better

I'm liking Ultra more than ever at this moment in time. I don't know why now though. For years I never liked it as much as some of the others but I have listened and liked it more over the last 12 months...very odd! As for comparing it with SOTU......not sure...now, hasn't that 'Insight' from me changed your life forever? Ha ha....glad to be of assistance!!

This is strange ... I've never seen so many fans say that Ultra is epic. The majority used to say that Black Celebration was it, or Violator. Seeing so many say that Ultra is epic is very weird to me, especially when compared to SotU, for some reason. I love Ultra, but it really is so unique to every other album, so it's difficult for me to see why so many regard it as their best. Each album offers its best.

I'm guessing it's because many of you are newer fans? Or, maybe you became more enthralled with dM around that time, so it has sentimental value?

It seems albums take turns with their popularity. Each one needs to sit a bit. Songs of Faith and Devotion was totally ragged on for some time by the older fans. I remember the haters ... it took a bit of time for them to warm up ... to catch up with Mode's forward-thinking. Now, it's regarded as one of the musical highlights of their career.

To me, Depeche just keep getting better and better. SotU is a concept album, in my ears, which is why I enjoy the overall feel so much. It flows beautifully. I think it follows PtA nicely in that regard, healing the pain and suffering. Also, I feel the style of SotU is very much like Black Celebration was ... mostly in the diversity of songs -- the slow ballads mixed in with the dancier mid-tempo songs, the similarity of albums looking to where the world is standing/going currently, both share an epic first single, etc.

Either way, SotU is definitely one that will open up your mind, both musically and lyrically, if you let it. Dave did a fantastic job on this one, and Martin really outdid himself. Such a mature album!

This is so nicely said!

They're definitely getting better and better, you can hear it in their sound, I even like SOTU more than PTA... If I had to use just one word to describe SOTU it would have to be 'peace'.

I don't understand why should specifically Ultra be compared to SOTU?
It's not like you can compare any of their albums, each has a life for itself
