Who does backing vocals on Photographic (Some Bizzare Version)? Doesn't sound like Martin. Is it Vince, or Dave backing himself? I can't quite tell. Difficult to tell who's doing the whispers, but that really could've been anyone.
What is the line after "the years I spent just thinking of a moment we both knew"? The lyrics page says "a second boss looking into", but in live versions from 81-86 it sounds like "a second passed like an empty room", especially if you listen to Martin's backing vocals. I don't even know what Dave sings sometimes in 2006 versions (house?). The S&S version does sound like "a second boss...", but Some Bizzare Version definitely sounds like "a second passed..." to me. Can somebody shed some light on that? Also, in live versions of If You Want, is it Alan backing Dave? And what is being said during the last minute or so? Sounds like mooing, really! Dave seems to be saying *something*, just can't understand it. Thanks! |

Very difficult to tell, but it sounds very much like Martin doing the backing for the verses, with perhaps Vince backing him on the chorus.
"A second past like an empty room" That's how I'd always heard it; however, a quick look at Ye Olde site http://oldsite.depechemode.com/lyrics/photographic.html says that it is indeed... "a second boss looking into" Like many lyrics, I suppose it means whatever you want it to mean. Vince's DM lyrics are in the same vein as Bolan's (i.e. they look as if he wrote them sitting on the toilet) but they fit the music.

Yeah, I don't try to understand the majority of S&S as I know the lyrics are generally nonsensical and were intended to only sound good with the music. But there are of course a couple gems (such as Photographic, Puppets, and Shout) that foreshadow the greatness of DM's lyrics.
Thanks for your insight. |

On the recent live versions Dave definitely changes that lyric. I think you're right, he used to sing "Like an empty room" at least that's what I found myself singing when I join in. The version on my Dublin 2006 disc sounds more like he's singing "empty band"?

In DMLHNCD01, Martin seems to be singing room, but I still can't pinpoint what Dave's singing. I'm contemplating asking about this if I ever meet Dave or Martin. I'm sure it'd be a strange question for them, hehe! |

Looking at The World We Live In And Live In Hamburg, it appears that Martin doesn't sing. Just Dave and Alan.
